The Whitworth Hall Country Park Hotel, Spennymoor
Just to the east of the town of Spennymoor you’ll find the Whitworth Hall Country Park Hotel.
The Grade II listed Whitworth Hall is a country house and former family home of the Shafto family.
Before the Shaftos, Whitworth Hall Estate was owned by the Lords of Whitworth spanning as far back as 1183.
The present house dates from the early 1900s but there’s actually been a manor house on the spot for centuries.
Whitworth Hall is said to be haunted…
Members of staff have reported sudden temperature drops in the Library Restaurant.
And a ghostly apparition of a man sitting at one of the restaurants tables has been witnessed on many occasions.
Books in the restaurant have been known to mysteriously fall off the book shelves on their own accord!

The Lumley Castle Hotel, Chester-le-Street
In the town of Chester-le-Street you’ll find the Grade I listed Lumley Castle.
The building is a former 14th century manor house which was later fortified and turned into a castle.
It’s said to be the most haunted place in County Durham!
The ghost of Lady Lily Lumley is said to haunt the castle by walking up and down the corridors and suddenly appearing in rooms.
Phantom children are often heard playing on the top floor of Lumley Castle by spooked witnesses.
A ghostly apparition of a man sitting at the bar is regularly seen by both shocked members of staff and guests to the hotel.

The Ancient Unicorn Inn, Bowes
The Ancient Unicorn Inn in Bowes was once a coaching inn back in the 16th century.
This old coaching inn is rumoured to have the odd ghosts or two knocking about the place…
The ghostly apparition of a twelve year old boy has been seen by startled witnesses in the cellars of the inn.
And a ghost of a bearded man wearing a bowler hat has also been witnessed at the Ancient Unicorn Inn.
