The Haunting of Devizes Castle

You’ll find Devizes Castle situated in the centre of the Wiltshire market town of Devizes.

The present day Neo-Norman Gothic castle is used as a private residence.

It’s a Grade I listed Victorian castellated mansion which stands on the spot of an 11th century Norman motte and bailey castle.

Over the years the castle has gained a reputation for being haunted.

People have reported hearing a man’s eerie voice coming from one of the castle’s bedrooms.

A ghostly apparition of a woman dressed in white has been seen on numerous occasions wandering around the castle.

Another ghost witnessed at the castle is that of a very tall Cavalier.

His apparition has been seen rushing down the main staircase.

Probably the most active ghost at the castle is that of an old woman who’s been seen in the gallery.

Witnesses described her as being dressed in mourning clothing from the 19th century.

Apparently she walks stooped over with the aid of a walking stick.
