The Haunted George Hotel
High Street, Wallingford OX10 0BS
The 16th century George Hotel is located along the High Street in the heart of the historic market town of Wallingford.
The hotel was established in 1517 when it started life out as a coaching inn called the George and Dragon.
Two rooms within the hotel have a reputation for being haunted… Room 3 and Room 5!
Room 3, or the teardrop room, is said to be haunted by a ghostly lady who’s said to have been the lover of a Royalist who was stabbed to death in a bar room fight.
She’s said to have been heartbroken at the news of his death and cried uncontrollably in her room.
Legend says that she mixed her tears with soot from the bedroom’s fire and painted teardrop symbols on a wall in the room.
Recently, a guest staying in the room reported that he was woken in the night by a ghostly apparition of an upset young lady with tears rolling down her face.
Apparently, she turned away and disappeared through the teardrop wall!
In Room 5, terrified guests have reported to have been woken in the middle of the night to find the apparitions of two little children standing next to the room’s wash basin!
FEATURED HAUNTED HOTEL: The Black Boy Inn, Caernarfon
To the rear of the Black Boy there was once a convent which probably accounts for the many sightings of a ghostly nun seen walking through the building.
Many guests have heard the sound of a phantom child crying in one of the inn’s bedrooms.
Apparently, if you ask whether the child is OK it stops crying!
Members of staff and punters alike have reported seeing a ghostly figure of a man sitting in the bar area of the pub just watching people.
And a senior member of staff was certain they saw a ghostly apparition of a woman in the bar area when they were working late one night.
