Haunted: The Hayes Hotel, Northiam, East Sussex

| On 18, May 2017

The Haunted Hayes Hotel

Church Lane, Northiam, Rye TN31 6LP

You’ll find the Hayes Hotel along Church Street in the East Sussex village of Northiam.

The Grade II listed building dates back to the 17th century.

A former owner of the Hayes Hotel got the shock of her life one night.

She was in her bed reading a book before going off to sleep when she glanced up to see a ghostly apparition of an attractive woman standing in the middle of her bedroom.

She described the woman as being in her early thirties wearing a white hat, grey gown and carrying something in her right hand.

She tried to adjust her bedside lamp to get a better look but when she glanced back the ghostly woman had disappeared into thin air!

Local legend says the ghostly woman may be the spirit of a baker’s daughter who was murdered in the bedroom.

Another ghost said to haunt the Hayes Hotel is that of a little old lady who be seen sitting in an alcove by the main bar.

There was once an old spinning wheel that stood in one of the alcove corners which would sometimes start to spin on its own accord.

It’s said that the ghostly old woman was responsible for spinning the wheel.

On one occasion a spooked guest reported that she saw an apparition of an old woman standing over the spinning wheel!

FEATURED HAUNTED HOTEL: The Black Boy Inn, Caernarfon

To the rear of the Black Boy there was once a convent which probably accounts for the many sightings of a ghostly nun seen walking through the building.

Many guests have heard the sound of a phantom child crying in one of the inn’s bedrooms.

Apparently, if you ask whether the child is OK it stops crying!

Members of staff and punters alike have reported seeing a ghostly figure of a man sitting in the bar area of the pub just watching people.

And a senior member of staff was certain they saw a ghostly apparition of a woman in the bar area when they were working late one night.
