The Haunted Melville Castle
Gilmerton Road, Edinburgh EH18 1AP
You’ll find Melville Castle situated in the countryside about a mile from the Midlothian town of Dalkeith.
The Category A listed Gothic castellated mansion house dates back to 1791 when it was first built for Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville.
The building fell into disrepair in the 1980s but was bought in 1991 by William Hay who restored it and opened it as a luxury hotel.
During the renovation work in the 1990s shocked builders reported seeing a ghostly featureless shrouded figure appear next to the fireplace of the library bar.
They later found a blocked-up doorway in the wall where the ghostly figure disappeared.
Spooked guests at the hotel have also reported seeing the same figure reflected in mirrors and hovering at the foot of their bed in a certain bedroom on the first floor!
Some people believe the ghost is that of Henry Dundas wife, Elisabeth Rennie.Click Here to Stay at Melville Castle
