In the ancient town of Rye along Mermaid Street you’ll find the Grade II* listed historical Mermaid Inn.
The inn dates back to 1420 and has a reputation for being haunted…
So much so, that the paranormal TV show Most Haunted investigated it!
Between 1730 and 1740 the Mermaid Inn was used by the notorious Hawkhurst Gang who were a ruthless gang of smugglers.
Some of the dead smugglers are said to have never left the place…
Room 3, 7, 14, 15, 16, and 18 are all said to be haunted.
Room 3 is said to be haunted by the wife of the Hawkhurst gang founder George Gray.
Room 7 is said to be haunted by a man in old-fashioned clothes.
Room 14 is said to be haunted by the ghost of a white lady.
Room 15 is said to be haunted by another lady in white.
Room 16 is said to be haunted by the ghost of a man.
Room 18 is said to be haunted by the ghosts of two duelling men.
And last but by no means least…
