The Haunted Overwater Hall Hotel
Ireby, Wigton CA7 1HH
The luxury Overwater Hall Hotel is located in the village of Ireby.
The Grade II* listed hall dates back to 1814 when it was originally owned by Joseph Gillbanks and called Whitefield House.
The present name of Overwater refers to the nearby Overwater Tarn.
The tarn plays a key role in the local legend and haunting at the hall.
It’s said that Joseph who made his money as a merchant in Jamaica had an affair with a local girl on the island.
Upon arriving back to Overwater Hall the Jamaican girl track him down and told him she had given birth to his child.
Upon hearing the news he took the girl in his boat onto Overwater Tarn where he threw her overboard to try and drown her.
But she fought back and tried to pull herself out of the cold water back onto the boat.
It’s said Joseph then brutally cut her arms off with his sword to stop her from pulling herself back onto the boat!
Today, members of staff and guests alike have reported seeing the ghostly apparition of a young black girl with no arms at the hotel.
The ghost of the young girl is normally witnessed around New Year’s Eve and is said to announce her manifestation by knocking on the windows!Click Here to Stay in the Overwater Hall Hotel
FEATURED HAUNTED HOTEL: The Black Boy Inn, Caernarfon
To the rear of the Black Boy there was once a convent which probably accounts for the many sightings of a ghostly nun seen walking through the building.
Many guests have heard the sound of a phantom child crying in one of the inn’s bedrooms.
Apparently, if you ask whether the child is OK it stops crying!
Members of staff and punters alike have reported seeing a ghostly figure of a man sitting in the bar area of the pub just watching people.
And a senior member of staff was certain they saw a ghostly apparition of a woman in the bar area when they were working late one night.
