The Haunted Three Crowns Hotel

High Street, Chagford TQ13 8A

Along Chagford’s High Street opposite the churchyard you’ll find the Grade II* listed Three Crowns Hotel.

The historic granite façade hotel dates back to the 13th century.

The Three Crowns has a reputation for being haunted since 1643 by the poet Sidney Godolphin.

At the time of the English Civil War Sidney was a Royalist officer.

He was shot in a skirmish in Chagford and it’s said he died on the doorstep of the Three Crowns.

One day, the hotel’s chef was scared witless after seeing the ghostly apparition of Sidney in full Royalist uniform standing in the doorway of the dining room!

FEATURED HAUNTED HOTEL: The Black Boy Inn, Caernarfon

To the rear of the Black Boy there was once a convent which probably accounts for the many sightings of a ghostly nun seen walking through the building.

Many guests have heard the sound of a phantom child crying in one of the inn’s bedrooms.

Apparently, if you ask whether the child is OK it stops crying!

Members of staff and punters alike have reported seeing a ghostly figure of a man sitting in the bar area of the pub just watching people.

And a senior member of staff was certain they saw a ghostly apparition of a woman in the bar area when they were working late one night.
